anyway i've been using this period to catch up on my reading!!! okay see i need to become a more well-read and knowledgeable person so i've been trying to read classics/must reads like
the catcher in the rye, the 5 people you meet in heaven, the fault in our stars, the great gatsby etc.
thanks to michelle (hehe i know you can see this) this has been made a lot easier!!
so yesterday i started reading the fault in our stars (and finished it /humblebrag):
4.5/5!!!!! it was a very good book. i teared while reading it, which is testament to how good a writer john green is. he not only invokes deep reflection, but also evokes emotion, and he makes you laugh at the same time! to me, that's the mark of a good writer - being able to draw the reader in like that, and making the reader read not only with his/her eyes, but her heart. i like how his sentences are so cutting - simply worded but with profound meanings. the hamartia of the book, though, was how it was kinda unrealistic - i just couldn't identify with the main character. i guess i was more of crying for her, than crying with her. also, the premise is kinda unrealistic as well (if you overlook the whole cancer-stricken thing), and in retrospect the plot did seem a bit like a fanfic hahahahahahahahhaha (i mean, go somewhere meet a super hot guy who is intrigued by you bec you look like his ex and then he is nice and charming and hot and intelligent and he does super sweet things for you and you fall in love and he puts up a lot of grand displays of affection for you and you go overseas with him and have your dreams come true only for it to be shattered so he can comfort you etc etc. how realistic is that why hasn't my hot guy arrived yet) but yes good book in all! 10/10 would rec
another book i've finished reading is the catcher in the rye by jd salinger. a disappointment, though, i was kinda expecting more since it's so widely hailed as one of the best, must-read books of this century, and since it's so often considered one of the literature greats.
well first off, the book was so. freaking. flat!??! there was like no climax in the story - it was all about him dancing with girls getting drunk roaming the streets of ny. was it supposed to be the final few pages of the book where he receives this big epiphany? i must've missed it. also, the main narrator was quite a whiny sonuvabitch. he seemed a bit like a try-hard (kinda ironic considering his hatred of phonies) and since it's narrated from first person pov i kinda just wanted to reach in and punch him in the face a bit after a while. also, he's a sad, pathetic, desperately lonely boy who's just confused about what he wants from life - and i guess part of the reason why i dislike him so much is maybe because his personality hits too close to home. after all, we're both immature 16-year-olds still lost in the process of figuring out the world, and maybe we're both a little too lonely to admit it. also, his inner rants and monologues are a pain to get through. (kinda like reading my blog post huh ahahahah) hmmmmm 2/5!
